In The Basement

I've been polishing my conscience in the basement
And talking gawdy nonsense in the basement.
And you were there to listen
With bloodshot eyes that glistened
In the basement, in the basement.

I've been vacuuming the lagging in the basement,
My enthusiasm flagging in the basement.
And you bore silent witness
To all that dreadful business
In the basement, in the basement.

Now we boast in startling prose
Of steam leaks tamed with bits of hose
And sing like heroes in dark blue clothes,

"Heave ho, gentlemen, heave ho.
'Ey up chuck and away we go.
'Ey up chuck and away we go."

I've been filling up the barrel in the basement
And wearing strange apparel in the basement.
And you took bloody ages
By the heat exchangers
In the basement, in the basement.

Now we boast in startling prose
Of steam leaks tamed with bits of hose
And sing like heroes in dark blue clothes,

"Heave ho, gentlemen, heave ho.
'Ey up chuck and away we go.
'Ey up chuck and away we go."

Dim light, dim light, sweating in the dim light.
